The Production

Back by popular demand, Live Nation has announced a 16-date 30th Anniversary UK Tour of Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of the War of The Worlds – Alive on Stage!

Following the hugely successful and critically acclaimed sell-out UK tours in both 2006 and 2007, as well as the Australian/New Zealand Tour in September 2007, the highly anticipated show - which features international hit singles – ‘The Eve of The War’ and Forever Autumn’, will be returning to the UK in June 2009.

Jeff Wayne will again be conducting The Black Smoke Band and The ULLAdubULLA Strings. Starring TV, records & theatre sensation Jennifer Ellison as Beth, Parson Nathaniel’s wife, and returning for the third consecutive year Moody Blues Justin Hayward as The Sung Thoughts of The Journalist, and Manfred Mann’s Chris Thompson as The Voice of Humanity and Alexis James as The Artilleryman. The newest addition to the cast is Australia's No 1 artist and MTV's Best Male Artist 3 years running Shannon Noll, who will take up the role of Parson Nathaniel.

UK fans and media alike were astounded by the groundbreaking technology already featured in the previous productions including:

  • 11-foot high 3D photo-real floating hologram of Richard Burton, In Sight and Sound, as George Herbert, The Journalist
  • 3-tonne, 35-foot tall Martian Fighting Machine firing Heat Rays at the audience and scanning them with its bug-like eyes
  • 100-foot wide by 25 foot high screen projecting CGI-animation and live performances throughout the show
  • Flame, Pyro and other exciting special effects to heighten the audience’s interactive experience!

But the 2009 Anniversary tour will be even bigger and better, in fact the best production yet!

Jeff Wayne comments: “To be playing our third UK arena tour (and international dates) for the third consecutive year has been a success way beyond anything we had envisioned. It's a measure of the loyal support of the many fans over the years, as well as the word-of-mouth about the uniqueness of The War of The Worlds - Alive on Stage!  The marriage between live performance and large-scale cutting edge technologies has surprised audiences and critics alike wherever we've played. But we don't simply take the previous tour 'out of the box' and do it all again in exactly the same way. That would be too easy! Each tour to our team is a major new challenge, and as a result, slowly, and surely, we add new and unusual ingredients. Next year's tours will be no different. We're most excited about this 30th Anniversary production as I believe we will have raised the bar once again, and hope that we'll blow away first-time visitors, or those who may have seen TWOTW before.”

Inspired by the HG Wells novel, the album originally released in June 1978 features a compelling blend of prog rock and classical, as well as a spell-binding narration by Richard Burton and outstanding performances by some of the biggest artists of the 70s, including David Essex, Justin Hayward, Phil Lynott and Julie Covington.

The album has enjoyed huge success and critical acclaim across the globe with some 15 million records sold, spending over 330 weeks in the UK Album Chart (to date) plus achieving two International hits singles. It has also won two prestigious UK Ivor Novello Awards, the US Best Recording in Science Fiction and Fantasy voted by a panel of judges including Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, and last year Jeff won Classic Rock’s ‘Showman of The Year’ Award.

Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of The Worlds has grown into a true classic, garnering a new generation of devoted followers, whilst inspiring the faithful listeners from the past decades.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Jeff Wayne’s multi-platinum award-winning work, a special Limited Edition box-set of 2006’s debut UK Arena tour was released on November 24, 2008.

Originally number 1 for seven consecutive weeks in the UK’s Music DVD charts, the outstanding 2-disc DVD of THE WAR OF THE WORLDS–ALIVE ON STAGE! has now been brilliantly repackaged with exclusive artwork plus a companion Special Edition of H.G. Wells’ original classic science fiction story.

Published by Penguin, the book incorporates the anniversary artwork on its cover, along with images inside from the show, plus a special standalone postcard print of the 30th anniversary poster.

Also included is full information about the exciting new production touring UK Arenas in June, 2009.
